I need to get a new engine into my HZ Overlander quickly. The engine has started to leak water from an unusual place and it's getting worse - looks suspiciously like a blow out in the head gasket from water to outside. As I have the VP 5L sitting there with a HQ sump, mounts, new balancer etc all ready to go and I bought a Redline valley to fit a VN headed 308 on the weekend cheap I'm going to pull the EFI stuff off the top and stick the carby valley and HEI dizzy on it. I simply don't have the time right now to have the ute off the road for more than a weekend, so that is why I'm doing this - EFI can come later.
I just bought a gasket set for it. I never use the cork stuff under the valley, just a big bead of blue silastic. But what I wanted to know is what is the best sealant to use around the intake ports? Is one of the aviation "form-a-gasket" goos still the best stuff to use? Or is a smear of blue silastic best? I ask this for two reasons:
1. I'm always wary of aftermarket stuff fitting properly ie the Redline manifold and the idea was to avoid air leaks by using sealant with the gaskets.
2. The valley will be coming of at some stage over the next year to have the EFI stuff go back on and I want the gasket to come off without resorting to drastic measures, hence the blue silastic thought.

Oh, and one other question on torque converters: I'm going to buy a low stall Dominator Powertow converter and put it back in with the VP engine. As they are about $500 I want to make sure of one thing. The Holdens with factory 308 & TH400 use a TH350 sized converter I think. If I decide to fit a 454 to the ute at a later date (ie not happy with the EFI engine as a tow engine) will the torque converter bolt up to a 454 flex plate? Keep in mind even if the smaller flex plate fit it won't work as a 454 is externally balanced and needs a weighted flex plate. Plus the 454 is a one piece rear main and the smaller flex plates probably won't fit it.

The last time I did the Chev with felpro gaskets and a dual plane manifold, I used blue hylomar gasket jointing compound around the intake ports, and that did the trick nicely.

I think that is the same stuff as the the blue silastic I referred to? Basically a silastic compound but not affected by oil, fuel etc and doesn't fall off in engine blocking strips?

Byron,

Can't remember what state you're in, but if this set-up has to go trough a rego check then you might have an issue. As the engine will be VP, you'll have to comply with VP emission requirements. Or does the overlander have different requirments?

Already dealt with (straight LPG). The VP bottom end will not be there too long anyway. It will either be replaced by a stroked HJ bottom end with VN heads or a big block.

Try to use a non acidic cure sealer on any parts that are Aluminium. Red and Blue are acidic.From memory the ultra range is non acidic cure.The best sealers I have used are toyota and mitsy and Wurth make a gray sealer which is about equal to them.I gathe
