Hi there,
Can someone please help me with this problem. I got given a '86 XF 6cyl, carbied, the last owner said to do the timing i have to join a 2 pin plug together with bit of wire to bring down the idle before setting the timing. But,....when i was working @ a exhaust/mechanic shop, every time we timed an engine we brought the revs up to around 3000rpm. I ask this because i've never worked on a ford XF before & wanted to know if this is the right way to set the timing? As the engine still detinates when under alot of load, not good.

Hey buddy try doing it at idle speed with vacuum advance disconnected for base timing. when reving it up to 3000 or more that's only checking for total advance. You can try retarding the ignition timing a little bit & it should fix it unless the car has o

Hey muzza the description he gave you was to do the timing on an ea-eb-ed.why did he say check timing. 250s runs at 6 degrees btdc, but if you run premium fuel you can get away with another two degrees but just advance it till it pings and then back it of

hey bud only fuel injectd modle has base timing no such thing on a carby car. and rememba do it all when car is at operational temp

do the timing at idle with the vacuum advance line pulled off.factory timing is 6deg but they run better at 8-10 deg btdc

you need to get the car at operating temp, put the two pin jump wire in which bypasses the computer,its in the loom near the brake booster,it will bring the idle down, set your timing to where you want it, pull the jump wire off idle will rise slightly, s

doesn't the Carbied XF also have electronic spark timing & a DFI module on the distributor?
