Hey guys,

I was hoping you guys could give your thoughts on my current project. I have a HG Belmont ute I want to do up soon and having trouble which way to go.

The ute has an ok 186 engine, although the lifters are starting to rattle etc, getting a bit tired. All I've done so far is a set of walker extractors and a 2 1/4 Lukey exhaust. 4 wheel drum brakes and the standard banjo diff. Has a M20 4-speed and a Speco shifter.

Now my mate has a recon 186 minus the camshaft, and this looks like a good place to start. I want to hot the motor up a little but still remain sensible as it's my daily driver. What I was thinking was a mild cam, yella terra heads, 350 2 or 4 barrel carbie, maybe some stronger lifters and rockers. What kind of cam would be good for this application? Needless to say I'll have to upgrade to a disc brake front end at least and replace the diff. Would a HK 10 bolt diff suit this application? Or if not that would would be the best suited? The M20 is rooted, the syncromesh is stuffed so would it be a good idea to bolt on a 5 speed supra, or get the 4 speed reconditioned?
Would a mild 253 use alot more fuel than what I'm planning with the 186?

I'd be very grateful for any feedback you guys can give.

Cheers

Howdy, fellow HG lover. If it helps I have a HG ute with a 308 that I'm replacing with a six, to be a daily driver again. It used to have a 186 which was pretty good on fuel (comparable to a VN we had at the time). I then drove my wife's 253 for a while &

When I do a rebuild on a std moter I use a cam which is one over std .Std has a valve lift of .338" EFI straight 6 had .408" valve lift One over std (TQ20) has around 420"-430" depending on who made it. (Speed pro are ok) So you can still run std lifters

Make it as cheap as possible. If your mate's 186 is OK and cheap get it, get a mild grind, in old timer's speak say a 25/65. I'd then get a 186S inlet and carby and fit a HEI dizzy off a blue motor. Also fit a $75 flashlube kit and the head should be OK w
