Hey guys. ive got a 1977 (hz) sandman. it has a 253 which im not really liking. im 90% set on gettin a 350. i was just wondering if anyone has done this b4 in like an hq-wb (as im preeeety sure they all have the same engine bays??). i know u have to get the radiator reformated and get engine mounts etc, but yeah just a few pointers would be good. im most likey gettin the TH700 gear box. if anyone knows what carby suits them best let me know too, ive heard the 650 is best but yeah, open to opinions. thanks guys

Hi JR,

Before you spend a cent or lift a spanner, talk to the Rego people in your State as they may, or may not, allow 350's in an HZ.

If they do, you'll just need all the usual Chev into HQ - WB bits - Mounts, radiator, wiring, etc.

i dont know if this makes a difference, but the engine im lookin at is the TPI (tune port injected) 350 chev. it came out with fuel injection but the guy im buyin it off said he will put a different manifold on and a carby, well whatever u have to do to m

check with RTA first it will be the cubic size that matters, in SA anything after HQ never used to be able to have a 350. you could get a 308 and get it stroked.

The official NSW answer to a 350 in a HZ is "no". Having said that the only thing stopping you is ADR27A, and this can be got around if you do it right.
Any Engineer that is worth seeing will let you put a 350 in a HJ-WB based solely upon the fact that t

how much would it cost to get an injected holden 5.7 because this isnt really costing me all that much. $2800 complete with the TH700 gear box

Would the TPI Chev engine not be setup for unleaded? If so & you fit it to your Holden, retain the EFI & fit the exhaust system with cats then surely you are exceeding ADR27a & making the car cleaner, more powerful and more fuel efficient.

Hi Guys.

Yes, Jim5.0, the TPI motor would be suited to unleaded fuel and would easily exceed ADR27A, but try and find an engineer to approve it.

the car is set up for pet/gas. ive had 2 people recomend straight gas, why is that? i dont know heaps about cars so sorry if my questions sound trivial

Running straight gas allows you to optimise the motor for gas. Thios means compression, inlet, valve sizes, cam profile, ignition etc. This all leads to optimal power and economy. Dual fuel is a major trade off, unless you can run a twin spark map setup.

The other reason that people recommend straight LPG for Chev motors in later model Holdens is that you then don't have to comply with the pollution regs as they don't generally apply to LPG powered cars. However, I believe that is changing in some States
