We are continuing the building of a HG project car and after reading the forums have come up with our shopping list. We would appreciate any comments from those in the know about any of the choices we have made. Engine: Either 202 or Line bored HP ( for appearances only ) with blue 202 crank, starfire or blue rods, YT XU1 head with rollers, XU1 cam and twin barrel strommie off 186S, cast iron 186S headers. Can anyone advise on a good piston and suitable compression ratio using premium unleaded. Will any 202 or 186 compatible piston suit. Gearbox: Steel Celica. Diff: BW78 LSD from VL or VN. Please advise if VP - VR will also work. Brakes: Rear disc standard with BW78 diff. Front: VN - VS discs and calipers. Please advise if these will bolt to HG stubs or if we have to use HQ-WB with re drilled discs. Regards
Hot Cam

Personally I think the cam is way to big, especially for a 179. I'd drop back to a 30/70 at the biggest. It will be too much work to fit the blue crank into a 179 so I'd use the red 202, just make sure it's a rope seal block to suit the crank. ACL make go |

Thanks Byron for your information. The motor will actually end up a 202 as the bore will be 186 or 186 + .060. Stroke will be based on the blue crank. Is there any other work required to the HP block apart from line boring the mains to fit the blue crank?

Hi Guys.
The actual cam size, or duration will depend on which 'XU-1' cam you're talking about. In the '70s we fitted a lot of cams ground to a '186 LC XU-1' spec, which was labelled 28/63. This cam was a good streetable cam for mild 186 & 202 motors.

In that case you are right that it would end up being a 202 but normally the mains are ground down on a 202 crank to do this (line boring is no cheaper than major crank grinding plus you can end up with cam drive problems), but why bother boring an old 17 |

IIRC, the VN diff IS abotu the same width as HQ - WB, so a bit wider than VB - VL and HK - HG.
VP are either the same width as VN or a tiny bit wider.
Cheers...Dave

Hi Guys.
I've just gone thru the VN-VS diff width thing, so here goes.
We have to exclude the VN SS Group A & SV5000, as these use a VL length housing to allow for the big rims, & obviously don't count IRS diffs.
All VN/VG/VP/VR/VS (sedan/wagon/u |

Terry is spot on with the XU-1 cam. I assumed you were talking about the 1972/73 202 cam, which is way too lumpy for a single carb street driven 202. |
