Will my HZ tonner 253 with 4 speed manual box/floor change take a 3 speed box.Box is original so would that be an M20?
Did the 253/308s come with 3 speed manual or was it just the 6 cyl models.
I wonder if there were 3 speed boxes which had the threaded bosses on the top for the floor changer, or are those on the extension housing?
Can't remember exactly.
I guess there would also be the issue of how to deal with the reverse gear lockout on the changer.
I'm probably not going with the flow on this one...like less gears rather than more so please don't give me a hard time!

Hi Jack,

I can answer some of your questions.

Yes, there is a 3 speed V8 box (called the M15) and it is EXACTLY the same externally as your current 4 speed except for the extension housing on the back.

I'm not sure, but I don't think the 3 speeds

Hi Jack the 3spd did not come out with factory floor shift.You can buy aftermarket shifters for them but you will have to cut a new hole in the floor to use them.There were three types that I remember and none lined up with the original 4spd hole.The main

Hi Guys.

The 3-speed M15 box WAS available with a 3-speed floor shifter. It was export only for LC/LJ Toranas. AFAIK they just used the 4-speed extension housing on the 3-speed maincase & a 4-speed shifter with no reverse lever or cut-out. It wouldn't

I didn't know about the export three speeds Dr Terry.You learn somthing new every week on this site.If you fit a 4spd rear housing on to a 3spd, there is nothing to hold the reverse idler shaft in and it will fall out.

Sounds like this is actually achievable.

So,my understanding is that with an M15 box the 4speed extension housing should bolt up OK and the existing 4speed changer can be used.
There is the issue of the reverse idler that hqss mentions.Can these unwan

You need the v8 input and bearing retainer.You need the reverse idler or you will have no reverse gear. The easyest way is to fit the aftermarket shifter.If you wanted to go further you could swap the column and linkages over out of a 3spd car.

Hi Guys.

Firstly an M22 is the 'wide ratio' 4-speed Aussie box that looks the same as the M20 & M21 Aussie boxes & is used in 6 Cyl commercials usually 1 Tonners from HQ to WB. It has a 3.74 1st gear.

Both the 6 & V8 3-speeds are known as the M15.
If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0
