I am pretty sure this is wrong but i thought i would ask to see if anyone has any ideas.

my xb has a 351 and a fmx auto.

when i am at stopped in drive the car idles at 1200 rpm yet when i put it in neutral it idles at 2400 - 2500 rpm. also when i put the car in gear it clunks hard and the car lurches forward.

now i would expect a gain of maybe 400 in revs but 1200 - 1300 this seems wrong.

have i got a ****ed transmission?

Sounds like the idle is too high and the clunk is caused of the high idle

Also sounds like your idle circuit isn't working properly hence the idle screw having to be turned up that much. Once you sort your idle circuit you'll need to adjust the mixture screws as well.
