I'm looking for a suitable V8 engine and automatic transmission for my hot rod project and am wondering which of the 2 engines would be the smallest in mass, the Holden 253 or the Ford 302. On the 302 what would be a suitable automatic transmission for this engine and the pick up part of the sump is it towards the front or the rear of the engine.

I would think that the 302 would be the smaller engine as it is only a 60 deg v. And it is a ford engine not the holdet ****. And the pick up is at the front of the sump.

Could the pickup area on the 302 be made so it works at the rear of the engine.

The C4 is not an overly large transmission. For a rear drop sump you can get them from later model Mustangs & Econoline Vans. I got mine from Engine Centre in Melbourne. www.enginecentre.com.au contrary to popular belief the 289/302 is not a 6 Edited by user Friday, 7 September 2007 11:06:32 PM(UTC)

Mate, The P76 all alloy V8 is a small, lightweight engine. Weighs less then a 6 cylinder but has more power than a 302 or 308. They are a proven, reputable motor and being all alloy, heads and all, would look good in a hot rod, not to mention different.

Good points Dmax. There are also the Lexus LS400/430 quad cam V8's they are basically an all alloy 60cm cube in volume. Lot's of power, 6 bolt mains, come with front, centre or rear drop sumps depending on the donor car. Cost <$2000 if you look around. |

The P76 ran a Borg Warner 35 transmission or the single rail 4 speed manual (Did they have a 3 on the tree too?) The diff was your common garden variety Borg Warner.
