why did holden build 4 cylinder commodors or 202 statesman cheers

The 202 Statesman is an easy one, Ford were making a 200 drum brake bench seat manual Fairlane and stating that they were selling more fairlanes that Broughams, which were V8 only with all the bells and whistles.

Diesel Geminis were also a result of the 70s oil crisis that was a kick-start to the 4cyl commodore plan.

It took them a few years to work out they were using almost the same amount of fuel as a 6, for less power....

The 202 Statesman didn't last very long in Australia. The 253 became the base pretty quickly.

And Holden had that thought pattern with the VQ - being V8 only, but realised the market opportunity for a V6 in VQ Series 2.

Another thing to note is that I had a 4 cylinder Commodore once (the engine was rapidly upgraded to a worked 6 cyl).

A mate of mine had a 3.3 litre XD with extractors & a sports exhaust. The XD could creep ahead of the Commodore from zero to 80 but no

Probably a lot to do with the extremely low gearing of the big block Commodore. 3.9:1 diff and 13" wheels.
