Could anyone please help me out by telling me whats the best fuel economy you can or have got out of you standard Holden 253 engine, also what can i do to get better fuel economy.

I have done some things like replace the plugs, plug leads, all the fuel filters, put a carby kit through the old WW twin barrel strom, done a full oil change and put fuel additives through the fuel system, replaced all of the fuel hose and the temperature doesnt go over 180°F though usually sits arount 140°F.

The box is a auto and the diff ratio 2.76 and she runs on 98 octane premium.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,
Mathew Murphy

Hi Mathew,
I get roughly between 15L (highway) to 20L (city) /100km out of my WB panelvan running Premium ULP. Its got a blue 253/Trimatic/3.36 diff. The motor is standard but it has extractors and a twin exhaust.

You should be getting better than thi

Hi Mathew,

I have had both HQ auto and manual 253s and the auto is a little thirstier. Rhys is pretty much on the money.

One a steady highway cruise my auto 253/tri/2.78 mix could get 13.5ltr/100km (20.9mpg) with very light throttle, and in the cit

John is spot on. The only way to effectively improve economy is to spend $1,500 (plus $500 in other bits)on a wrecked VN-VS V8 and transplant the 5L and TH700 into your earlier Holden, to then get 20-25MPG. But you can spend a lot of fuel on you

My 2 cents: Had a 253 (HQ 1 Tonne) with manualised trimatic, electronic ignition, K&N filter, Quadrajet & 3.08 gears - 13 to 14l / 100k's.

One one the best mods I ever did to improve fuel ecomony was to get the distributor regraphed. If you are going to run 98 octane fuel exclusively, there may be some gains here for you, but again the auto is a limiting factor. Hope this helps.

The type of car will have a noticeable effect. In the late 1970s I worked with a man who had a 253 manual Torana and he consistently got 27 mpg without trying too hard. The heavier models will use a lot more, particularly with an auto.

Getting your dissy recurved might help and also check the vacuum advance is working.

And the electric fans are a good idea. Usually cool the engine better too.

And for my two bobs worth, I'd look at changing the diff ratio back to a 3.08 as I've see
