G'day fellas, need some help with my 308. It has absolutely no guts from a standing start, wants to stall, even when fairly warm. If I try to tow anything it's nearly impossible, and I brought the revs right up on it and dropped the clutch and it still wanted to stall. Once it gets over the initial splutter it runs beautifully, done a couple of 3 hour highway trips in the last month and it hasn't missed a beat other than using a bit of water.
Its got a quadrajet, M21, and standard exhaust.
Where do I start? The motor has around 10,000km on it since it was rebuilt.

the quaddy is sick..sounds like no squirt from accelerator pump...might be in the timing as well.
With the engine off, pull the air cleaner and look down the carby as you work the throttle. Does it squirt fuel?

What diff ratio has it got? Some manuals had 3.08 doff in which with an M21 gearbox gives you a fairly tall 1st gear. I had a similar problem yrs ago towing my trailer.
Check what the other guys have mentioned as well.
Another thing to check if yo

Ian, Did the power/spluttering problem start from when the engine was rebuilt or just recently? If the problem started straight after the rebuild, the cam timing may have been set incorrectly. In the Holden V8s, the cam timing can be a tooth out and stil

Take the dissy cap off and make sure the rotor arm moves against the springs/ weights. They could also be stuck and not advancing, Also suck on the vac advance tube and see if the point base plate moves etc....
