G'day just a few queries, I'm looking to remove a 253 from my panel van. All front pannels and bonnet is gone, all wiring gone and coolant drained. I have a decent size engine crane (with a hook on the end of the hanging chain) I just need to know how to attach the hook to the engine? I was thinking of placing 2 slings under the engine?
Any advice greatly appreciated.

You need to hold it from the top of the engine, if you put a sling under the engine it will roll..
I use either a chain on the exhaust manifolds or a strap across the top.

Hi Guys.
What Warren has said is spot on, it will roll over too easily. I find the best way (because I have to lift many different types of engines) is to use a chain & find 2 vacant bolt holes & simply put the bolt thru the chain & into the vacant hol |
If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0 |

While the above methods will work very well, it is sometimes difficult to get the engine to balance perfectly and the chains can also damage the rocker covers during the lifting process if they are not removed. I normally use the inlet manifold bolt hole

If I might add my 10 cents worth to the discussion...
I found with the nose cone and rad support removed on my tonner(they needed work anyway) it was really easy to get the 253 out and in, complete with transmission.
Hardly any lift required, just a

I have a plate made up that bolts down on the intake manifold in place of the carb. Everything balances perfectly if you are only pulling the engine out. If you are pulling out the gearbox attached to the engine, it will obviously hang down at the backbut

Ended up wrapping one chain around the alternator bracket, around the 2 mountings and another chain attached to a plate, attached to 2 bolts located at the rear drivers side of the engine.
Lifted fine, tilted back a bit but worked a treat, cheers guys! |
