Hi guys, I recently just swapped my old 308 engine from the hz tonner with a s/h engine (approx 10 months from its last start) and have noticed when I started it it has a loud knocking sound from the bottom of the engine. The engine was supposed to be in good condition with no knocking sounds. Before starting it, I put new oil and oil filter and let the engine rotate for a little while before actually firing it up. Im hoping its making the knocking sound because the oil needs to still go through the engine and not a crank problem. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Hi Frank,
I would have probably not filled the sump with oil straight away, just circulate a mix of diesel and clean oil in there firstly for a couple of minutes running. This will clean up all the oil galleries and flush out all the nasties. Once this i

Thnx for the advice, I will take the oil out and try your method to clean it out a bit. Would half a litre of diesel and half litre petrol be ok?
Also did you mean take the sump off and put it in there or can i put the mixture straight into the oil fill

You may even "prime" the oil pump. Take it off, and fill with oil, then put it back on. I had the same prob., Was running very noisy on the first start.

No need to remove the sump, just a 50/50 mix oil and diesel straight into the filler, and drain out through the sump plug.

Connect a remote accurate oil pressure gauge before you start it again. Pressure should come up fairly quick. Priming the oil pump would also be a good move.

Thanks for all ur help guys, cleaned it out with the diesel and it sounded better than before. Just now it seems like there is no oil pressure as i can hear the noise from inside the rocker covers which could indicate the oil isnt getting up there.
