Howdy,
Whaddyrekon would be the tallest diff ratio a 186 could efficiently drive on the highway? I've been told too tall will reduce economy, rather than improve it.....is 3spd & may be upgraded to m22 oneday. Not too concerned about off-the-line performance, but I do heaps of highway stuff...Ta guys.

If running 14" rims and say 185/75/14 size tyres, it should easily push a 3.08:1. I had a mild 202 in an LX with a Celica 5-speed, 14" rims with 245/60/14 tyres and a 2.78:1 diff and it was OK, which equates to a 1:1 top with around a 2.4:1 diff.
I think

Hornet,

Twenty years ago I tried a 2.78 diff in my 71 GTR Torana. It had a red 202 bottom, mild cam, GTR head, WW carbi, extractors, Opel 4-speed, 13 inch rims, can't remember the tyres but they were not low profile.

I found it increased my fuel co

Hard to say. It was a 202 with blue crank/rods, 30/70 Waggot cam, Yella terra head, electronic ignition, 390 Holley 4BBL on a Cain inlet and extractors. It was very torquey. I used to tow my boat with it and it easily pulled boat and trailer up boat ramps
