Hi all,

I've recently relocated states and have been picked for a leaking rear main seal. It is not a big leak, but the officer is insistant on no oil leaks. I don't have a lot of time and money (just starting a new job) and my car is my lifeline to my job and many other things.
Are any of you able to please suggest a way of stopping this leak for the inspection. The problem with the process in WA is that you line up and keep starting your car and moving it forward in the line until it gets inspected. Any leak will show up during this and can't be wiped.

So what ways are there to stop this leak besides doing the seal, which i can't afford. If my car goes off the road then I can kiss my job goodbye.

Thaks in advance.

Paul

Hi Paul.

A quick fix that often works is to use slightly thicker quality oil (25W60 or 30W70) & fill the sump only to the bottom of the dipstick, then give the sump etc. a bit of a degrease. The motor will still be well lubricated even if the oil level
If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0

That's really not fair, is it - I was gonna suggest degreaser until I read the process. Don't know about modern holdens but in the old ones I thought an oil leak from the rear was standard from the factory! It was the best way to tell if she's low because

If it has a neoprene rear main you can try a bottle of stop-leak/seal conditioner. It does work - I tried it once on a very leaky HQ Statesman 308. It leaked about a tablespoon in 5 miutes and stopped within 10 minutes of putting the Wynns stuff through.
