Guys

Finally got around to trying to fit Commodore seats into a HZ using runners off WB buckets.
The Commodore seats I have are VK Calais so the driver’s seat has height adjustment. I think this is the same as WB Caprice. The WB buckets I have are out of a Kingswood ute. The passenger side seat runners bolt straight on. But I had to modify the RH runner on the driver’s seat by welding the WB mounts onto the Commodore runners. However if you are using Commodore seats without the height adjusters the WB ute runners will bolt straight on.
Then when I went to put the driver’s seat in I discovered that the distance between the back and front seat holes on each runner was spot on. BUT, the distance between the runners was too small. The LH runners were 20mm short of the nuts in the floor. Bugger. From memory WB ute/van/tonner floors have double nuts captive in the floor pan on the tunnel side holes, and this is why. So I had to drill new holes 20mm in from the floor nuts on the holes closest to the tunnel. I just used nuts for now, but later I’ll chisel some of the original captive nuts off the floor of a rusty HQ-WB and tack them to the floor so it looks factory.

So the moral is, Commodore/WB seats will fit in HQ-HZ’s but you need to drill two new holes on each side and use WB bucket runners. If you do it properly, the holes you are drilling are adjacent (20mm away) from the factory captive nuts and are through the same double panel. By tacking identical captive nuts off another floorpan on the underside of the holes it should be as strong as the original setup.

And the buckets seem to give me more legroom than the old HZ buckets, and definitely heaps more than a bench.

Byron
