Hello All,
I have a base model HK coupe and am looking at overhauling my brakes (disc front/drum rear).
Rather than changing to HQ style, I want to keep the early stud pattern.
I ideally require advice on any mods or improvements which can be made to the earlier brakes.

ie, big nut master cyl (can I use one that says drum on the nut?) drilled rotors, HT/HG V8 thicker rotors, different booster, brand/model of brake pads, etc.
One option is to change to HQ and redrill the hubs to HK stud pattern.

I will be overhauling the complete braking system so please post a comment if you have any good ideas on this subject.
Thanks

I have a HK, that required it to have HK stud pattern, but I also wanted better braking. So I got Hoppers Stoppers, to make me up some HQ rotors with HK stud pattern. Bolted up a treat and looked awesome. Except my wheels didnt fit. Rim was fouling on

Ok tku edelbrock1, I think P76 are Ford stud pattern from memory so they will require drilling as well. I think I will just go for the HT/HG V8 rotors as the vehicle is not a racer, just wanting some better brakes than the underengineered HK.

Hi vern.

There isn't a huge difference between HK and HG brakes. All they did was make the front disc rotor thicker. All HK & HT except GTS 350 have 1/2" thick rotors. HT GTS 350 & all HG have 5/8" thick rotors. 1/8" spacers are fitted to the calipers

I agree with Dr Terry. HQ-WB discs and calipers bolt straight onto HK stubs. You just need to get some new ones drilled for 4.25" PCD. If you pay DBA or RDA to do it I'm sure they will drill them for you. Just be careful of the orientation of the

You need different stub axles to mount the HQ calipers, don't you....? I thought that the HQ-WB calipers were different to HK-HG, as they were made to go over the (much) wider rotor?

Hi Guys.

The HQ rotors and caliper will fit the HK/T/G stub axle. The main thing to check is caliper clearance to the crossmember on lock.

HK-HG and HQ-WB are the same part numbers for the stubs - they just swap side to side. There are also some different part numbers for some of the 1-tonners but i've never been able to pick the difference.
If I remember correctly the HZ PBR caliper is the

Vern,

I have a HG ute and I recently upgraded the front brakes to disc (2-3 weeks ago)

What I had was stub axles, the rotors and calipers from a HG monaro. Also got the master/booster cylinder combo from the hk/t/g series v8 booster I think. Only p

Hi john.

The Girlock alloy calipers are lighter but have less pad area. I've found the HQ PBR cast iron caliper a good all rounder. I don't think changing to alloys would be an improvement.

The size of the rear cylinders goes like this. The HK/T/G w

Ok thanks guys. I know the original post was some time back, but you can't rush these things when you don't have a shed anymore... arrggg!!!

As I had mentioned, will have to overhaul the complete braking system as the booster is causing a hard pedal an

Hi Vern.

No, the boosters & m/cyls are not all the same.

The drum/drum m/cyl has 2 residual pressure valves (1 at each outlet), whereas the disc/drum m/cyl has only one (at the rear brake outlet). You can remove the valve from a drum/drum m/cyl for

(re an earlier post) What does a proportioning valve look like? I have an HG with factory disc front & I was under the impression that it had one, so just stub axles, calipers & disc were required for the conversion....??

Hi Beige.

HK/HT/HG have no proportioning valve fitted to any model.

To convert from drum/drum to disc/drum in an HK/HT/HG, you wil need:-

Front stub axle assemblies complete with discs, hubs, calipers, hoses & all associatied hardware.

Realised my last post was a bit ambiguous (spelling...?). Dr Terry is the list you gave for a HQ brake conversion? I have factory HG discs & was contemplating going over to HQ because I've been told they're heaps better. Mine work fine now, but hopefully
