Hi,
I've recently fitted out an under dash (non integrated) air con to the HQ ute. After a few weeks running fine, this happened:
Switched from full speed down to medium. After a few minutes, it started making horrible rattling noises, then went to flat out fan speed for a few seconds, then blew the main fuse and died.
Now... two things that I think have contributed to this...
Firstly, the fan motor was gummed up with red dust when I got it. I cleaned most of this out, unseized the motor, and lightly sanded and oiled the shafts to get the motor going properly before I installed the unit. It was still a bit rattley, though.
Secondly, the resistor spring set that controls the speed had prior damage. I didn't trust the low speed, so I never used that, and I had to re-solder the medium speed spring back in. (Those who have pulled a fan resistor apart will know what I'm talking about.)
What I suspect happened, is that on medium fan setting, the load on the still-dodgy fan was too much, the resistor set got too hot with the extra current, and either the resistor set is stuffed, I've burnt out the motor, or both.
So now I have to pull the unit apart while it's in the footwell of the ute, as it's all plumbed up and I'd rather avoid degassing and regassing. Anyhow, that's my problem...
My question, after that mini-novel, is... do modern fan units still use these resistor spring packs, that rely on adequate fan flow for cooling, or can I substitute something else (perhaps high wattage resistors) in place???
And I guess... if the motor has burnt out, are they a fairly standard size that I can rip from another stuffed air con unit? It's a cylindrical type blower.

Mate, great site, many thanks. Seems to have a replacement fan that might just fit, and with the 3 speed one, I can bypass the resistor problem entirely.
Now to get the old one out without disturbing the gas lines!

jason i am pretty sure you will be able to get the motor out without messing with the gas line.

Thanks John - I think that you're right. Heaps of room in a HQ footwell, and from memory the top and bottom plastic shells do come apart leaving the heat exchange in place, so fingers crossed. Had a bit of success with this over the weekend. John, you were spot-on, the unit came apart easily leaving the gas lines intact.
The problem was the fan blower motor, not the resistor pack. It'd run for a few seconds attached to a battery, then blow
