After fitting the old girl with bucket seats and disc brake front (HG Ute) I've started to look towards the engine.

It's got a 186 and a M21 at the moment. I've looked at working the six a bit but the V8 keeps on edging its way into my thoughts. Alot of people say the Chev engines are better than the holdens in v8's is this true?

I wouldn't go anything over a 308 or the chev equivalent. I was thinking a 283 or 307. Are parts for these hard to find/expensive? The T350 box should mount straight upto this no probs right? And the diff I was going to try find a Hk/t/g v8 somewhere. any thoughts and steps to start making this happen is appreciated.

Whats the approximate mpg of a 253, 283 and 307 stock. I get about 20 with the old 186.

Cheers

Go for a 350 Chev. The HG was available with a 350 Chev from the factory so rego is no issue.

Also there is an incredible amount of 'go fast' parts available for the 350 Chev and are very cheap to build and modify.

You can pick up a brand spanking

Depends what you want. A 283 is a sweet engine. A 307 is a stroked 283. Both will be reasonable on fuel as compared to a 350. But I'd go for an EFI 5L out of a VN-VS. Straight bolt in using HT/G 253/308 sump and pickup. Uses stock HT/G mounts, radiator et

The reason I'm not going over a 308 is for insurance reasons, being only 21. I've spent quite a bit on brake reconditioning and fitting so I really want to keep the HG front on it, because I have the mags to suit as well.

So the 253 is a no go then? I

253 is fine, but honestly the way of the future is EFI. You'll learn as much playing with Memcal programs as you will fiddling with a carb and dizzy. I can send you software to have a look at if you like, or at least send you to the right place for a dwon

That would be great thanks Byron

My email is [email protected]

Thanks

I know the sensible way would be EFI but for looks and sound, especially keeping with the old school theme I can't pass up the carb setup with a small block. But I'm interes

Real early double hump fuellies. 461 casting. Way too high for a 307.

Plus you'd be surprised how good an EFI 308 sounds with a good exhaust. At least as good as a carbied one. Plus:
Starts 1st go, idles immediately. Auto choke that works. Factory cru

Byron is right about being able to tune EFI for economy or performance, but problem is paying someone to do it if you can't do it yourself. Which most people can't. Cost me $1400 to get my LS1 commodore tuned. The result is great, but I still can't get in

You'll be surprised how easy the AC Delco is to modify. And how cheaply it can be done. Online hardware is a bit more expensive, but having a play offline isn't that hard ie change and try. I'll dig up some stuff.

Sounds good Sandman, that's my main concern with the newer motors....great I've got one in there but when something decides to give I have to pay someone else to look at/fix.

Right now I'm thinking I'll go for a 307 stock or a 283, whichever I can find

64cc is tyhe combustion chamber size. Go for powerpack heads if you go for a 307 or 283. They have the same ports and chambers as 462 fuellies but have smaller valver, which is probably better for street use. You can also build a 307 out of a 283 by using

Thanks for clearing that up Byron. Yep my plan is to try find an original 307 and rebuild it and most likely mate it to a T350. Were the powerglides that came out behind them any good? 2sp auto right?

Obviously easier getting the 307 then finding a 2

The 307 in a HK/T had a 2 barrel rochester. But use the Edelbrock with Quadrajet off a blue 308 which should be close to the right setup for a 307. Also buy a HEI dizzy for it. If you run a large port head like Powerpacks, Fuellies, Darts etc leave the po

HG, What sort of engine do you want to build. A street/ strip engine? A daily driver thats goes good or pretty much a stocker.
Also are you planning to keep the car and upgrade it later?? If you are, it's worth buying some good bits you can use for a bet

Basically, this engine will be a daily driver i.e I won't be running the 1/4 mile just yet :P

In saying that, I'm looking for the right balance between the daily driver with a bit of guts but won't cost me a fortune to run. So I'll be leaving the major

I rang the wreckers all excited and the guy says, "Nah sorry mate that's long gone."

Ah well, I have found a HK Premier with a 10 bolt and some other goodies (check my latest post) so hopefully I can get this then I only have to w
