I think it's just an electrical actuator to engage the mechanical overdrive.
Had an Austin-Healey 100/4 in the family a few lifetimes ago and that had a Laycock de Normanville electric overdrive, with a switch on the dash to turn it on, with a

These were a bolt-on item that went behind the gearbox, and the tailshaft is shortened & goes into the back of it, as the factory didn't offer the extra gear within the gearbox.

They have been around for years - at least since the 30s with an additiona

Hi fallingbear
Don't know how achievable attaching an overdrive might be but there seems to be quite a lot of info about these units, and they seem to have been used by AMC and Chrysler as well as in Europe, even on Ford Transits.Have a search for Laycock

So the OD units might still be hanging around in the wreckers somewhere. An XJ6 unit would handle a fair bit of power I would have thought.
