this may be a tired old question but here goes are 253 and 308 cranks the same and if get a crank reground does it have to be rebalanced ? and what should a reground and balance cost ? cheers

No they are definitely different, but are physically interchangeable as long as we are talking identical rear main seal types. Theory says that when you replace the pistons (and rods) the engine should be rebalanced, but in normal use this doesn't happen
