advice please

1. just wondering what size engine crane I should purchase to pull out grey motor and gear box. I note the vary from 1000 kg to 3000 kg. Wont be needing it for anything heavier, although may one do put a red motor in car. Is 1250 kg good enough this is the size I thought I would purchase.

2. Do you find engine levellers a good tool to use? Are they worth buying?

3. Where is the best location to bolt engine crane chain to grey motor to lift it out - does it matter?

I have an engine leveller and I find it very usefull. It is fantastic for tilting the engine and trans to clear the top of the trans tunnel when installing. The same applies for removal.

Mine is a fairly cheap one (not the cheapest available though)

Your engine only weighs 170 kg or 206 with the transmission attached so a 1250 kg crane is more than good enough.

If you are using rope or chain then loop it down under the back of the engine between the sump and the flywheel and under someth

The ratings quoted for most engine hoist are for maximum load with the boom hoisting at its shortest length.

The reality is that you will, in the majority of cases, hoist the engin/gearbox out from the end of the boom. The effective max load

Don't buy an engine crane at all if you have some way of hooking a chain block up. You can buy a 1/2 tonne chain block for about $100.
Cranes are a pain to store when not in use. Also they don't always fit properly, make it awkward to lift the engine out

You'll also notice that alot of the cranes have numeric ratings at each pinhole on the boom arm so, as stated above, you know what it is meant to max out at where ever you extend it to.

It's great reading all these different ways of pulling a donk!

...oh and one more thing - IF you do end up with a crane, make sure the ground you use it on is smooth as badly cracked or pebbled conctrete can make 'rolling' a loaded crane a reeeeaaal pain in the butt!!

and also check the ceiling clearance if you ar

I used a 2000 kg crane to pull my 350 out of the tunner I might add the heads were off it, as I lifted it out the left rear of the crane lifted off the ground. I had to get my 90 odd kilo son to stand on the crane while i pushed the ute back away from the
