I've got a sick 1971 308 - 2 cylinders running at 30% comp. 6 running at 65-75%. It's got a holley 465....yep, some genious put a 465 on a 308 and it's low comp, standard NASCO all the way. Because it's date coded, I'd rather rebuild it than swap it. So can you guys throw some specs at me. I'm thinking 355 stroker, VN head, holley 650 or 700 etc. What cams, pistons, etc should I be going for? Would it be too much to take it to 383? i really want a cruizer, not a quarter mile rocket - but my mates have 351 clevlands and 440 big blocks and I want to put in a good showing. 400HP is a bit of a target. The bloke doing the rebuild is an old holden master, but I want to canvass a few ideas from others......Byron, are you there?

Firstly, a 465 Holley is fine for a street 308. A healthy 308, assuming 80% VE only needs about 425 cfm at 6000rpm. The only low comp 308 came from a Bedford. Cheers, Byron..really appreciate it. Given your comments on the block, I've come full circle and will now totally re-originalise this existing motor - I am talking rochester carb, original manifold - will blue print, hardened valves, very mild cam - but o

.....i am thinking that getting it into completely original condition will be better for long term value. Do you think that engine mods effect originality value. I mean, it needs a rebuild - should I just refresh what i've got, replace the holley 465 with

If you only perform bolt on modifications, they can always be changed back at a later date or before sale. The majority of the value would be in keeping the block itself in working order.

I'm with you, Byron. Sorry to push the point.....but how original should I go....I am thinking - lose the holley for a rochester, lose the edelbrock inlet manifold for an original(but slightly worked....."brock spec")manifold, original heads, rocker cover
