I have been offered a 186S block. A mate wants one for his 1971 Monaro. The engine number for the engine is 186S444xxx (can't remember it all, but definitely is 6 numbers total). However, the casting date numbers say C18, which would make it a 1 March 1968 casting. It is the highest engine number I have ever seen for a 186S though. I have seen one that is 186S411xxx that was cast in December 1970, and another that is 186S363xxx that was cast in the first half of 1970. Does anyone know whether an engine number this high could come from a March 1968 block, or is it possible the casting number has had the year put in the wrong position (and hence is really 8 March 1971). Thanks.

It could also be 18/3/71 and the 1 is hard to read ie C181. The month-day-year was used up until sometime around late 1972 - can't recall exactly when. I've seen 1972 HQ V8's with the US style date codes.

Thank you. I think you may be correct about 18 March 1971. The engine number is way too high to be a 1968 motor. I'll be going back for a much closer look. Cheers
