HI

Advice please

Have a red gearbox (assume red because thats its colour) in my old holden - dont know what model -drained it and took it out with engine.

Now have put it back

The gearbox only had one drainhole (on the side) - as far as I could tell there was no filler plug? Is this right?

So I assume you fill it using the side drain plug located about half way up the side of box?

How much oil do you put in?

What type of oil?

Should it have a filler plug?

Lasly when putting the car together I inserted the propeller shaft back into the rear extension housing of the gearbox? I assume this just 'seals' automatically - is there anything I need to do to stop the oil from leaking out from here?

thanks

Jeff

Jeff

The "drainhole" on the side is the filler plug. You pump the oil in and when it starts pouring out it is full. To check the level you remove the plug and put your finger in, if it comes out with oil on it it is full.

If my memory is correct t

Hi Jeff,

Agree with everything Brian said. I'll add the following...

I had my M20 manual gearbox (red in colour, 1975 era) professionally rebuilt... he said a few things:

- Use Penrite Manual Gearbox Box Oil - XTRA LIGHT. Comes in 2.5L contain

Holden always recommended 90 weight Gear Oil for the Aussie boxes although I have used 85W-140 as well with good results.

Cheers...Dave

The best oil I have used is a synthetic called Red Line Lightwieght shock
Its expensive at $35 per 900ml but what a difference to the life and smoothness (used in M21 Aussie)
