Hi all,
Just wondering if someone can help. The battery light on my WB Caprice is staying on, which to me points to the alternator, but the one on there seems to be only a couple of years old. Its a bosch with an external regulator. I've taken the regulator off and the brushes are about 15mm long, and the regulator itself seems newish as well. Both brushes move in and out fine and don't stick, and have even wear.

The L connector on the regulator is wired to the battery light and the S connector is wired to the B+ terminal on the alternator. There is a thick wire going from the B+ terminal to the +ve battery terminal and also a wire running from B+ to the air con relays under the black cover. There is only 11.5V at the B+ terminal while the engine is running (same as battery). It stalls when taking one of the leads off when running. I don't have an ammeter to test the output current unfortunately but the resistance across the 2 brushes is zero. Does this mean the regulator is the problem? The high tension lead next to the alternator was off for some reason so maybe a spark has jumped across into it? Would this zap the regulator or possibly something else in the alternator?

If someone could point me in the right direction that would be great, I realise a new alternator with regulator will fix the problem but if I can get away with just getting a new regulator that will save me a few dollars and hours!

thanks
Rhys

you must have electronic ignition then (the elec-dis needs power running throught it to keep working - it seems to me the you are up for a new alternator. if the battery is disconnected the power from the alternator should be keeping it running,

We change a lot of regs on these types of alternators because the reg it self dies not just the brushs.

Hi all,
I put a new regulator on today and its fixed the problem. Even though the old regulator looked brand new, it was kaput!

cheers
Rhys
