Hi everyone Im looking at purchasing a cheapish car to get me to work and tow the pop top when we go away and was considering a vn-vs commodore! What are known issues with these cars I may look our for on inspection? A net guide link would be awesome I have googled with little luck! I looked at a vr tonight with 170K on the clock. There was oil on the intake manifold but I wasnt sure where it was coming from there was little to no blowby gas coming through the oil filler when open and the trans fluid dipstick was redish but when wiped hard on my finger had black in it... The car drove ok and body/paint interior was pretty good. Tyres were worn and the exhaust was original They were after $3800 with a roady Is this reasonable or a bit much? I thought a bit much when considering I would have to replace exhaust/ tyres and possibly starter and alt soon seeing they had never been done apparently. any help much appreciated cheers rileyp

Be careful of TH700R and early 4L60E when towing. They can do it, but just make sure the transmission is OK and you have sufficient cooling for it. I've heard stories of people frying them towing in overdrive too.

with that first VR if the trans fluid has a bit of black in it i would steer clear of it you should be able to get a good VS for around 5000/5500 with 200,000ks give or take

I can partly answer one of your qeustions Riley. The cam chain may be noisy at around 150,000 k's. Generally, it will be noisiest JUST above idle (as you take off) while accelerating very gently.
Cheers...Dave
