Hey boys,
Lookin at getting an HJ/X/Z/WB ute or sedan. I love the tough look of these cars, but i also know the horrors of rust. What is the best way to weld up the new patches? with what welder. I know rusty has a lot of experience in this area being a panelbeater, so how'd you do it? I have an SIP 100amp gasless Mig welder and an arc welder, are either of these any good for welding up body repairs?
any help would be much appreciated
Cheers
Alex

The best way to weld up rust repairs is with a gas mig . I payed $490 (brand new from GLENFORDS) for my (MIGMATE TURBO 120 DUEL PURPOSE) its a great MIG & the gas bottles cost $30. each . You really need to have a gas mig because it creates a

To tell you the truth , if your doing repairs all day you'd probably go through 3 ,i find that if you turn the bottle down a little bit it would last longer . The bottles are about the size of a 1.25 lt coke . I have also used the mig with a proper big b

I'm thinking maybe i should take it to a panel beater and get it done properly. How much should i expect to pay?, i havent bought the car, but just imagine it's your average HJ/X/Z/WB ute.

Cheers

If you want a spot on perfect show room job 20,000 +++ if you want a job thats 90% perfect but still pretty good 10, 000 +++

It really does all depend on how bad your project is & how much material is on the metal (ie Bog ,paint ,primer ,)

I back you up there sandman. You are pretty on the ball there. We did a 57 Chev at work, and the final bill for panel and paint was $60,000 for a show job in pearl. An FB Holden wagon was $18,000 for concourse original job. Now all this can be relative to

I would recommend you get a pen & paper & yellow pages & just start ringing Panelshops and asking Questions
and comparing prices .

I have seen ads in the local RAG of mobile panelbeaters that come to your house and do Rust repairs. Thats a good ide

I'd recommend only buying a ute with an immaculate body. When you are talking collectable stuff like Monaros, Sandmans etc then you have little choice. But there are heaps of really good HQ-WB utes out there that won't need any rust work. Maybe some littl
