Howdy,
Can anyone tell me the difference between a SC12 & SC14 superchargers? These seem to be popular on the old red 6's - are there any other supercharger options for the 186? I've heard these are pretty good, bang for buck but don't expect over 10psi (which I thought would be fine for street use & giving the odd rice burner a bit of a scare). I saw a porsche unit on ebay that would probably be good too. I live in Qld so a 4/71 out of the bonnet is not really an option...

check out the last issue of street machine, they've got a torana with an SC14 blown 186 that runs 13's

much easier to do here in qld then in VIC, SA or WA - they seem alot more strict on stuff like that!
I had in my mind that the numbers relate to the amount of air they flow (12=1.2L, 14=1.4L) but I'm really not sure if that's right...

for the price though I'd be more inclined to go turbo.. probably cause I did... You can pick up draw through garrett strata kits on ebay fairly regularly and it'll make more power with the option of varying boost for cruising or burning the ricer modes!

My 2c worth:

Spend the same $ on a stroked 350 SB. You can build one of these very cheaply. New crank, rods, hypereutectic pisons, bearings and rings, ready to go are only about $1000. Will be more reliable, last longer and as well as blowing the ricer

Byron, we know that you'll always pick the v8 over the six, most of us would (including me), but petrol has shattered that choice for some of us. I recall beige had to swap his 308 for the 186 because of this. Also, centrifugal superchargers are very good

Go straight LPG. Gov't rebate on installation, and responds well to supercharging. Just a thought.

Depends on the car - ie where the tank goes and the size and number of converters. If you can sweet talk the gas conversion place and get them to let you mount the tank, converter, run the wiring, mount the gas switch and guage plus plumb the conveter you

Hey Boom - that Torrie is exactly what I'm looking for & I'm going to base my motor on that. LPG conversion and all. So I'm guessing that an SC14 would be the best blower to get. The next question is do I build the motor from the HR 186 I have spare here

Yes, a Blue 202 has more cubes & better rods, but there is no 202 steel crank, Red or Blue.

186 block with Original steel forged crank
Blue 202 conrods
Bore to 192 cubes,
ACL pistons as used by the REVNUC torana
ARP rod bolts
173 blue 12 port head
465/390 4bl holley
YT Roller rockers
Crow blower cam
Buy n SC14

I wouldn't going boring it too far if you intend to boost it. Try to stick as close as possible to a standard bore.
Also wouldn't run the 173 head - too much compression for a blown motor. Probably even too much for a carbied one (around 10:1).

I run Terra Charger at about 6psi, and it is on a stock red 202 .040 with stock new Yella Terra 12 port head, stock red crank, stock blue rods, cast roller rockers, single valve springs, stock ACL cast pistons dished to drop to 8:1 comp, stock ACL gasket

As most of you know I agree with Peter about the 202 over a 186. Apart from originality I can't understand why anyone would bother with a 186 (or 179 for that matter). The best way to make one of these go better is to stroke them, and in the end a 202 is

186's are stronger once built up with the forged crank. look up about 3 or four months ago, street machine did a 300hp grunt hunt. Yes i know this was a 202, but i reckon a 186 would rev harder, thus more power and strength from the block. But either way

Revving harder does not automatically mean more power. It takes power to make an engine rev, so the higher revs may not necessarily give you more power at the flywheel. This is why you have a peak power rpm. The power drops off after that as the engine is

There's lots of really good advice there & I'm taking it all in. I love the 250/292 idea but haven't seen any around - what d'ya reckon they're worth? I'm guessing I'll have to go through a truck wrecker to find one. I didn't get to ask all the questions
