Howdy,
I've heard a few people reckon the humble 253 is better on economy than a 202, & 308's are guzzlers. I can't see how this would be right, given there's only about 800cc's difference between the 253 & 308, but 900'ccs between the 202 & 253? If they're all in the same condition etc, surely a 202 would be the most economical? Also heard that 186's are way better on fuel than 202's which also seems odd as there's only about 250cc's difference....? What are people's experiences in this?

It also has to do with the efficiency of the engine, looking at 202s alone there are 5 versions:
HQ to HJ
HX to HZ
VC to VH
VK
Injected

They all get different fuel economy, with the HX to HZ being the worst. Power output from each is also differen

If you read old Wheels and Modern motor they all reckon Holden "fixed" the ADR27A engines in HZ, as compared to HX. What "fixed" means I don't know but apparantly they were impressed. Remember that Holden were often clever in their comparasins where they

power to weight ratio plays a part also , the same engine in different size cars will make a difference also, I have found the 202 auto in a hq with 3:08 diff is a bit heavier on fuel than a stock 253 with same set up

I'm surprised to hear a 253 wins under any circumstances. Had a mate who used to say his 253 could go from Charleville 1 to Dalby on a tank (nuthin special - 2bbl carb etc). I certainly wouldn't have tried it in mine, & mine had a 3.08 diff & a quadrajet.

Most 253's came with a two barrel. Had one with a four barrel and went better but use more fuel of course so that might be the main difference with the 308. But also that round Australia VB commodore was a 6cyl with triple carbs which gave better mileage

I have had few 253s and I know that a HQ with a 253, .308 diff and M20 box being fed by a 350 Holley at over 100kmh can get over 28MPG. I have heard 308s can do similar. Autos on the other hand...ugh !!

Hi all,
I figure it's all in the use of the drivers right foot :).
I got better economy from a red 253 with a quadrajet than a 202 with a WW strombie in my first car ... an LX 4 door auto.

I'll be running anything bigger than a 186 on LPG only

I've found with all the 308s and small blocks I have had that the economy is there is you run on the primaries. As good as or better than a 253, but the power is there when you open up those secondaries and you pay for it.

Pete.

Interesting isn't it - a lot of people here agree that generally 253's give better economy than 202's - and I'd agree with Gary that is has to be in the use of the loud pedal. Unfortunatley an efi conversion is a bit out of my budget & skill level. I also

Hey now here's a thought - do you think the same economy differences would be there between a 2bbl manifold & a 4bbl manifold on a 253 on LPG?

TH400 for a start - use heaps more power than a trimatic.

My panno has had a 202 then a 253 and now a 308 (where will it end?). It's been the same with each, I get 200km before I'm on empty (according to the guage, but it only takes 40L). The 202 went harder than the 253 but the 308 has been the most fun.

I guess everyone has good and bad stories about fuel economy. For a proper comparison the differents cars with different engines would have to be driven by the same person in the same driving style. Also it would depend on how well they were tuned etc.
