G'day, I'm a bit of a newbie to the whole car thing, but I love them heaps and am keen to learn so please bear with me. I've just bought myself a run-of-the-mill 1984 VK SL. Well, I thought it was run-of-the-mill till the guy who built it told me it's a 253 stroker (came off the production line with a straight six) with a trimatic auto with shift kit and small stall converter, so needless to say I'm happy about that, but the reason I've posted this topic is I've just been given the option to buy a 308 (not sure if it's red or blue) with an Aussie four-speed and I'm not sure which way to go, with the 253 or 308. I've asked a few people but haven't got any useful advice so I was wondering if you guys could steer me straight. Oh, and also, it's straight gas but I don't think it's been timed properly because it runs real sluggish, so what can I do about that? And is it true if you get it timed to gas you don't lose any power? Sorry about the long post, but as I said, I'm keen to learn!

Ok, so if this goes to here, and that goes to there... where does the engine go again?

Howdy, welcome to the forum!
If it's your 1st car I'm guessing you're a younger bloke without too much coin - I'd stick with the 253, & spend any money you've got on getting it running right & getting the rest of the car schmicko. 'Cause face it - a youn

Being straight gas you should be able to knock the compression up quite a bit. So I'm with The Beige Hornet 100% on this one, a worked tri with a shift kit and stally will make a big difference too.
I say DEFINATELY get the gas sorted and you should not

Thanks for all the help guys! I think I'll stick with the 253 for now, until I get more money, at least! I'll start looking round for guys to do the gas for sure, and see how she runs after that. Oh, and The Beige Hornet, I'm actually a girl! I know, it's
