Hi again guys, another one for you. I have a 1985 XF Ute with a 250 XFlow and C4 3 speed Auto that runs ok at low speeds but when I get up over about 90Kms/h I start to get a vibration through the gearstick and if I go even faster and get up over about 120kms/h the whole car starts to vibrate through the under carriage. The gearbox is reasonably new so I don't think the problem is with the gearbox and the car has been balanced and wheel alligned so I don't think it is suspension problem, so this leads me to think that it must be a problem with the tailshaft, driveshaft or diff. Or, I need new shock absorbers all round. What are your thoughts and before I go spending money on things to try and fix this problem, can anybody let me know what is the best thing to do to fix this problem?
Lachy.

Could be a tailshaft uni. Could be a dodgy tyre. Could be a loose gearbox mount. Might pay to stick the car on a hoist so you can have a good squizz.

Thanks Paul351xb. My first thought was the tailshaft uni or yoke and as the tyres are fine as they are almost brand new I can rule those out. What is the best way to diagnose if the gearbox mount is loose or if the tailshaft uni is loose? Will the bolts b

Though the tyres are new make sure you haven't lost a balancer off a wheel. For unis crawl under the car and give the tailshaft a twist and see if there is much movement. Gearbox mount would be noticeably loose if it's that. Like I said, best check on

as you have said the trans is fairly new It may have a weight knocked off the torque convertor or not lined up as some had drive plate balanced to suit convertor which is why it is always recommended that you mark everything and the realign the same way w

Thanks Mike, I was under the car today and had a feel around the tailshaft and it seems to have a bit of play in it so I am thinking that the vibration I am getting is probably from the Uni Joints? I am going to unbolt the tailshaft and have a look of the

My bad,
If the gear box has been changed it would most likely be that the tail shft needs to be unbolted at the back and spun 180 to fix the balance issue. If it doesn't work please dont drive down my st over 90 km an hour please :) |
