Joe Zullo in Sydney makes a very nice head for holden 6s . They flow awesome . Make good power . He uses one on his 6cyl rail which set the world record for 6s not so long ago . Around 8 secs at 155 + mph . Not bad for a red motor ! Big A 064

That was Mr Krogdahl (SP?).

Phil Irving also made (this time separate from Repco) a hi-flow head for the Red motor, but only 2 or 3 were ever made. These were not a cross-flow design, but had a high intake port, angled at 45 degrees.
Frank Duggan also designed a similar head to the high-port Irving head for the Red motor. Many of these were made. Duggans head design was also used in American speedway Chevy 6 & Chevy II (4-cyl) engined cars. AFAIK the Duggan Holden head design (& the dies?) was sold to another guy, who now calls them j.ZED. These are still available today.
Dr Terry.
These are the heads that I think of when someone mentions putting a "12 port" head on their Holden red when really they probably mean a blue/black head.

Krogdahl is correct...only other "performance" head I can think of in alloy would be YT alloy heads...probably the cheapest of the bunch but not crossflow.

Hi, I was at the first GM day in Brisbane some 6-8yrs ago. A guy turned up with an FC ute that sounded very nice and looked stock. I got talking to the guy and he finally opened the bonnet. There siting on the block was a alloy head on a grey. He had to buy an old drag car from Sydney just to get the head. He had to build back up the surface of the head as the compression ratio was too high. I cannot remember if it was cross flow or not but I might even have a photo of the car and head, but finding that photo is the question. Cheers Steve Edited by user Thursday, 21 June 2007 6:45:39 PM(UTC)

The Waggot head that I saw was on display at a Sydney motor show in about 1960. It had been built for a boat and used six Amal bike carbs. I have a copy of an old Wheels magazine that features a story on it.
This site shows one with SUs. http://www.aussieroadrac...omestead.com/Stone.html
I also saw the famous Centuar Waggot sports car racing. It used a couple of different heads but one was the twin cam.
I have seen two Repco cross flow heads on the street, one in a 1927 T roadster hot rod, but most of them ended up on the speedway. I think all of those special heads were designed with competition in mind. I dont know how they would go in peak hour traffic.
I think it was Phil Irving from memory who took his family car, a Peugeot 403, and made it into a V8 by cutting up two blocks and joining them together. I suppose that would be easy for someone who could design a F1 engine. I have another magazine somewhere that covered all the work that went into it.

Hello Brian. I have an original and complete Phil Irving alloy head as you have described here. It was built to run triple Webers. It is just an enormous horsepower maker. The problem with theses heads as that they require special pistons (with the compression chamber in the tops) and most mechanics run away from the idea! Getting the compression ratio right is also an issue. I have just exploded a Holden red engine in my race car due to too much torque from the head power and now going to build up a blue motor stroked and seriously balanced .....if I can find an engine builder with the knowledge to have a go at it. Anyone out there? I can be contacted in Tassie on 0429937057 Also, I could post some pictures if anyone can drive me through the process.....Old blokes cannot drive computers you understand!

Mate, sorry but this Twincam head that Krogdahl built IS CROSSFLOW, i helped work on the engine that one of the heads was going on, my good mate has the very first one ever made (it was built for his Drag car) i also have photos of the engine plus i have videos of it running the 1/4 mile. This head will fit on a holden Red, Blue or Black plus it will fit on the Ford 4.1 ltr. He has the engine set up to fit in a LJ Torana it has run Webbers and mechanical Fuel injection (Methonal) it was going to go into my Gemini Drag car but will have to cut most of my bonnet away. But this head has is magic on any holden 6 but put a good strong engine under it and it runs the numbers. I have Krogdahls number so if anyone is after one of these heads (Please dont waist my time) i can call hime and see what he has.

There is an engine builder in Melb. eastern suburbs thats working on one as we speak, so Im lead to believe. Similar to Dunstall but with variable port timing.
