Hey all, picked up a bedford tilt tray, is currently powered by a 292 chev six, a bloke at work (a long time ago) had a bedford and replaced the oe motor with a 253- he said it was a simple job. Anyone out there done it/ got one and mind sharing the info? Cheers Damien

It can be done , I knew a guy with a early 70`s bedford running a 327chev a bit thirsty though

My old man has an old Bedford truck that he uses on the farm. The old engine blew its self up. So he replaced it with a 308 from a new commodore. (was a VB / VC from memory, so it was a long time ago)
He used the standard gearbox with an adaptor pla

The 292 Chev six will eat 253's and 308's for breakfast. Having said that a TH pattern 308 will bolt up to the same bellhousing a 292 Chev 6 will (as will any chev V8) but a 253 won't unless it's an original Bedford 253. just re read your reply Byron, i missed the part about the chev v8 fitting the 292 bellhousing. if thats the case, the job just got simpler as i have a 283 with a th350 gathering dust. any ideas on flywheel? thanks again for help

11" Chev and starter to suit. The 292 probably already has one and it should fit the 283 IIRC, but starter may not. Check also that the 283 has starter mounts on the engine. BUT, I wouldn't replace a long stroke torquey 292 with a short stroke 283, especi |

Byron Rich why would you replace 308 for a 292 six chev unless you were pulling big loads often. Wouldn't it be better to use a 292....stroked out 253....which gives it a 88mm stroke and at least it's still Holden......a long way from ford's Falcon 100

The fact it's got 2 less cylinders and 300 cubes means the 292 has a monster stroke, making it very torquey. I can't remember the bore/stroke ratio but it's something like 4" stroke and just under 4" bore. You'd have to go to something at least as big as |
