Hi Folks I'm going to be fitting the windsor back into my ZD in the near future. I'm using a load leveler to make it a bit easier on the back and I'm planning to fit the C4 and engine in as one unit. My plan is to lift it with some engine lifting tags that I have made. Basically they are 4mm plate cut into a triangular shape with rounded points. I've drilled the base to match the exhaust bolt holes and have another hole at the pointed end for a shackle. I plan to attach one of these to each corner of the engine with high tensile bolts and use them to lift the negine in. I've checked out other lifting tags on late model cars and they are of a similar thickness. Is 4mm plate meaty enough for the job given the load is spread over 4 points?

1st thing when doin this, even though its on 4 points you have to assume that the load is only held on by 2 points at any one time saying that, 4mm plates are NOT safe in my opinion to do the job. Also because you have made these yourself, they haven't

Not sure where you will get it, maybe try a car place eg autobarn or something like that.
On the other hand look up a place that sells or produces rigging gear. maybe they could produce/already have something that will suit what you need. Or be able t

Hi 6pak, 4mm would probably be ok as long as the bolt holes and the shackle hole were not too close to the edges and the lifting chain did not pull at the brackets at a angle.
To be safe, make a set out of 1/4" inch plate and with enough metal so the

Sorry but right now I am gonna be very blunt. I am a rigger and have also spoken to this with another more experienced rigger and we have found many flaws.

4 mm does not sound very much until you look at the tensile strength of steel. Even ordinary structural mild steel from the local hardware store is about 35,000 lbs per sq inch. A Windsor weighs less than 500 lbs which is less than many six cyli

Thanks Brian Your point about two lifting points makes sense. I'm seeing the XR8 owner tomorrow night so i think I'll copy whatever is on her car. In the past I've welded up chain to flat plate lift engines in and out but I'm particularlt twitchy this

I put a 350chev with Th400 trans into my HQ with a tow rope and a few other ropes I found around the place.. I would go ahead and do it with what you have but also put a tow rope around 2 parts of the engine and tie it and hook it on the lifting equipment |
If its not broke it will be soon |

Thanks to everyone for their input. In the end my engine guy has sourced some AU heads for the motor which come with lifting tags so it all worked out nicely in the end, adjustable top end, more power and less chance of dropping the whole lot on my foot.
