Back in 1984 Holden dropped it's luxo barge Statesman and Caprice range. They also announced the demise of the Holden six engine in a couple of years to be replaced by an imported six.

Both of these decisions proved to be mistakes because the end of the WB meant that Ford had the LWB luxury segment all to itself. The imported 6 was a good idea at the start but then the dollar plunged against the Yen so the imported engine became a costly proposition.

Move forward 23 years & Ford are handing over the LWB luxury market to Holden and they have announced the end for the Falcon 6 engine to be replaced with an imported engine.

They say history never repeats but it seems to. This time the government are helping the demise of Aussie cars by dropping import tarrifs instead of raising them

It shi ts me to tears when the media & state politicians refer to the Federal Government as "Canberra"

now correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the Aussie 6 one of the best engines in regards to power and economey in the Ford world inventory? If so wouldn't it be better to keep the production and development of this motor going and find some overseas Fords

Jim,
I think old Bill Bourke would be rolling in his grave if he could see how one person, ironically from his own homeland, has come in armed with a bean counter brain and no real vision; in one stroke of a pen killed off the long wheel based fords and

It's simple economics. It is cheaper to import an already compliant engine rather than spend a heap of cash on the existing one to bring it up to Euro IV specs. Ford only sell approx 5000 Falcons and Territories (combined) a month (less the V8 Falcons sol

Here's an article that might help people understand better the reasoning behind Ford's move to import engines.

OK some fair points. But why of why has Ford headquarters never looked at the Aussie inline 6 to
go into some of it's other models, including some of the
other car manufacturers Ford has ingested over the years.
The Aussie 6 really is a fantastic eng

"Meanwhile in Geelong and Broadmeadows, Ford has struggled to fund panel changes for a unique Australian Falcon that sells only in Australia and related markets. It has been forced to go it alone on redeveloping an inline engine that won't fit in any of F

For a FWD Falcon to sell it would be a tall order as it would have to be a better car than the 380 or the Aurion which don't sell in big numbers because they drive the wrong wheels.
