Hi Experts,
No laughing as I have never done a car before but as I have a son at the right age we are going to tackle this project together.Make him appreciate his first car and all that. Plus Mum(thats me)wants to drive a little bit of muscle around.
Just purchased a HZ,rego till Oct, 202 with bigger block whatever that means. Where do we start as we have 12 plus months to complete.Which magazines should we look at? Are there any manuals on how to strip and paint? Have read several posts and would like to keep the HZ a holden car except for the colour...woman's perogative and all that.
For those who have stopped laughing I am happy to receive any tips at all.
Kalanga

Have a talk to a crash repair shop for paint tips, a bare metal strip is not for the faint hearted, maybe go for a rub back and repaint with undercoat and new colour, materials alone for a basic acylic paint job will be around $500-700 if you stuff up acr

Id be leaving it alone mechanically, maybe fitting a 4 speed. This is pretty easy. I can talk you through it if need be.
After checking the chassis for cracks (check at a quality suspension place) id be fitting slightly lowered spings (no more than an |

Keep things stock to start with so that you can get an idea of how things work and repair the obvious things like hoses, oil and water leaks etc, it will also be cheaper.
Get a decent repair manual, factory ones are the best but the Ellery and Gregory |
You only have to be in front at the end of the race. |

I would focus on all mechanical items first. If you spend more than expected and run out of money, you can still drive the car once the mechanical is done.
This is not possible if you do the body first, run out of money, and find there are mechanical i |

Thanks heaps to all who responded it is much appreciated. The concensus to work on the mechanical has been overwhelming and rather ironic as the young lad who sold us the car decided to take it for one last "Spin" and apparently blew the diff. Not happy a

I wouldn`t bought it after that, he has given the thing a good thrashing, 4hrs of driving to find that. I hope you either got a price reduction or a another diff to go with it from him.

Hi Kalanga,
One thing I haven't seen mentioned here is a cooling system overhaul. As many here would know, I bought a HQ ute about 2 years ago, that has had very little use in the last 5 years or so. One of the first things I did to it was to overhau

Given that diff is dead, ideal oopportunity to determine what you want it for and get appropriate diff ratio to put in. A 2.78 gives super economy, but not much in the way of acceleration, right through to about 4.55, which will get you off the line like |

Jabba
3.90 is the lowest ratio banjo, 4.44 for a large Salisbury though you'd be lucky to find one of these in a monocoque body style HQ-WB diff housing. You'd also struggle to find a 3.90:1 in a fine spline banjo to suit the HZ.
