ive decided to put a 4 speed in my WB ute. the ute is running a 253 HX engine. what type would be best suited to this conversion. after something reliable at a reasonable costs. the motor is standard and i'm NOT going to be doing burnout's or anything like that.
i know i'll need pedals, cables, bellhousing etc. whats a decent garden variety Box thats easy to get hold of all the components. also would i need to chase up another cross member and tail shaft or would the ones from my auto bolt straight up, cheers craig

If its a trimatic the tailshaft, crossmember, speedo cable and the hole in the floor will be the same as an aussie 4 speed. Just the driven gear on the end of the speedo cable will probably be different. The WB will already have the connectors under the d Edited by user Friday, 27 July 2007 10:19:09 PM(UTC)

All boxes look exactly the same externally, just V8 has the longer input shaft. The only 100% accurate way to tell is to pull off the side cover and read the part number off the cluster gear. M21 is too tall in 1st for a 253 in a heavy car, BUT if you hav |

It'll be 3.55 or 4.44. Even if you buy an M21 it can be converted to M20 or M22. Most secondhand aussie 4-speeds are buggered. Trouble is you don't know it until they break. I'd rebuild it before you put it in, and in that case it doesn't really matter w |

the ute will very rarely go out on the open road at the moment, with the gearing i have i think i'll probably get away with any box. but i do like the idea of the m22 for future ratio changes and more flexability for different driving conditions. thank Edited by user Saturday, 28 July 2007 4:09:07 PM(UTC)
