ive decided to put a 4 speed in my WB ute. the ute is running a 253 HX engine. what type would be best suited to this conversion. after something reliable at a reasonable costs. the motor is standard and i'm NOT going to be doing burnout's or anything like that.

i know i'll need pedals, cables, bellhousing etc. whats a decent garden variety Box thats easy to get hold of all the components. also would i need to chase up another cross member and tail shaft or would the ones from my auto bolt straight up, cheers craig

If its a trimatic the tailshaft, crossmember, speedo cable and the hole in the floor will be the same as an aussie 4 speed. Just the driven gear on the end of the speedo cable will probably be different. The WB will already have the connectors under the d

All boxes look exactly the same externally, just V8 has the longer input shaft. The only 100% accurate way to tell is to pull off the side cover and read the part number off the cluster gear. M21 is too tall in 1st for a 253 in a heavy car, BUT if you hav

thanks for the advice. i spoke to the bloke at the wreckers today and he said he could do me a full conversion kit for $550. he just sold an M20 but will try get another for one for me. i'll jump under the ute tommorow and see what my final drive gearing

It'll be 3.55 or 4.44.
Even if you buy an M21 it can be converted to M20 or M22. Most secondhand aussie 4-speeds are buggered. Trouble is you don't know it until they break. I'd rebuild it before you put it in, and in that case it doesn't really matter w

the ute will very rarely go out on the open road at the moment, with the gearing i have i think i'll probably get away with any box. but i do like the idea of the m22 for future ratio changes and more flexability for different driving conditions.

i checked my final drive. its 3.55
ill go for the m20 if i can get one, if worse comes to worse ill get the m21. further down the track when ive got enough money ill change both the diff to higher ratio and m22 box ratios for the best of both worlds, che
