Hello , amd once again i am calling on the good people to help me out :)
Subject : 186 prem driving down highway and it starts to shudder and chug / lose power, then it gets very rattly in the top end so i pull over.. it stalls...then i restart and it is rattly like i have a dropped valve or something?
I call my mate for a tow who sadly is unavailable, so i arrange another tow and take her home...but my good mate advises that it sounds like a rocker pivot bolt may have loosened and the rocker has came off..sounded good to me..except today i pull of the cover and all rockers are nicely adjsted and all looks good up top..

So guys and girls.. any ideas what might be wrong here?
It starts and runs and seems ok, then gets rattly and chugs along...
I am thinking , Cam lobe worn off ? Timing gear stripped?
Lifter seized up ? ( one has been a bit ticky for some time )but fine when it pumps up ?
Sump pick up blocked?
Any othe ideas before i rip the head off?

Also if it is a cam and lifter issue , is it a job i can do with the engine in vehicle ?
And where is a good place to get a cam to suit gas / auto highway vehicle ?

Thanks in advance ....

Anthony

Could have knocked a cam lobe off, however not a common occurance on red motors, very common on blue 6s and v8s though. I would suggest the timing gear has stripped partially and the valve timing has retarded as a result, yes it can be replaced without r

take your rocker cover off and turn over by hand.
count thru the firing order to make sure the valves are opening / closing, properly.
Luckily, Chances are that you have an "adjustable head" (adjustable valve clearance settings).

I would be doing a few checks before going as far as pulliung it down,,
Check compression, check oil pressure, check fuel/ timing, check everything first before you pull it apart,,
Where abouts are you?, surely there is someone with enough knowledge to
Cheers

Could also have broken the top off a piston, but I'd also suspect the fibre timing gear.

Its not the fibre gear if it starts and runs OK.

I am going for float level too high/sunk float/needle and seat.

have you checked all the plugs and leads to ensure you are getting spark?
maybe when engine warms up the insulation breaks down. i have had similar problems when a plug was faulty.
