Hi,

The old utes running well, but between 70km/h and 90km/h on the highway, sometimes the steering wheel and column will vibrate up and down really quickly. I can see it moving. Doesn't happen every time, but just occasionally while on the highway. It's not side to side, it's up and down.

It's not uncomfortable to drive, doesn't pull to any side, and if I clutch and let the engine idle, it continues. I can accelerate through it, and it slips along quite nicely. Slow down and it goes away as well.

It's a stock non-power steering setup, column shift manual HQ ute. Front wheel bearings are freshly done, and are not too tight or too loose. Steering shaft doesn't seem to have any play, and I can't find any steering or suspension components that have any play, either.

Is this something common that any of you have experienced? Any ideas? It's a bit of a worry... Appreciate any suggestions.

wheel balance. wheel allingment and worn upper or lower
ball joints all contibute too these things off the top
of my head start with the cheapest things then work

If it's the column that is shaking and not the steering wheel, then being a column shift, I would suggest that you are getting a driveline vibration being transferred through the linkages to the column, check you uni's and the gearbox rear bearing for pla

Thanks to both of you guys. Gives me a list of things to start with. :-) Ill also check what happens when I take it out of gear at that speed - if it stops, Id say itd be an indication that its coming up through the linkages from the drive train.
