Im just wondering what the advantages of gear drives are - Obviously it sounds pretty mean, but is it possible to improve the cam timing? i have never had any problems with chain drive! what is the big advantage ?

No real advantages compared to a good quality chain and believe me,you"ll get tired of the constant whining from the gears.

I am no expert here, but i think in holden sixes, the helical cut gears are stronger than the straight cut ones....?
Obviously they dont even use a chain drive ... with todays quality of double row chains, i will feel safe using one of those any day :)

I agree with Brett. You will get very tired of the sound of straight cut timing gears very quickly. I had a set on my 308 GTS and they were so noisy it became embarassing to drive the car.

Grab yourself a quality timing chain set and youll be fine.

that straight cut noise, is energy, hence, energy loss.
and also friction = energy loss.
i assume they would wear out quicker?

I have never gone for them.
