Easy one here,
My 186 trimatic prem gets 200 klm / 20 litres of gas...stock engine ( now faulty ... I have 202 with a medium cam ( i think ) extractores and triples ( which will come off and get sold ) roller rockers etc, so its a hotted up engine, if i run a gas carb and vl ? intake (its a 12 port head ) , or a 450 / 350 with snorkel up top.. Will my gas consumption go up much for the same style of hi way commuting that i do now? I understand that it will be more ci , so it will use more, but just how much ? I dont mind if it goes up a little, say 15 % and the extra power will be good, but its just a daily driver... The engine is in my panno , which is getting a chev , so i am thinking i may as well use it...? Any thoughts on this... Thanks for your experiances..

VK EFI intake is what you are referring to. The extra cubes shouldnt make much difference to economy, but the cam probably will. Id pull the cam out and put in an LPG cam. And just use the induction setup off the 186 on it (with a blue motor manifold of Edited by user Sunday, 19 August 2007 2:46:40 AM(UTC)

More cubes will generally give more power and torque so therefore you will not have to rev the bigger motor as hard for it to do the same amount of work.

I have found going from 202 Red to 186 in a HQ - WB series actually increases fuel consumption.
186 certainly better for economy than 202 in the lighter holdens.
annecdotal info only.

I am absolutely amazed you can get 10 kilometres to one litre of gas.....? Have you double checked these figures.....? I was talking to a taxi driver the other day, and he reckon about 8 km to a litre (gas injection) on a good run, otherwise about 6

Thanks everyone for the advice, its all good, but i think Byron is right, except i was hoping not to spend any money on this one... I think my cam in my 186 might be worn out , so i could do the same on that .... i was just looking for an easy way out... |

What carby is on the 186? The other possibility is to spend a few bucks on a VRS gasket set and put a red head back on the 202 and then use all the carby, inlet etc that is on the 186 on the 202. If you chabge the cam on the 202 you have to pull all the |

you could fit triple Impco 125's.
I Currently have a bog stock QL 202 with Impco 425 4 barrel on cain 4 barrel manifold.
My car (EH) has M20 and a 3.08:1 diff with 185/70 13's (i think) on it. I do 130 km per day (95% highway) and get 5.7 km per lit

My EH used to get 10km/ litre+ on gas no problems. That was 202 with celica 5 speed and 3.08 diff. 2200rpm on the highway.
I got to Canberra from Melbourne on $20 a few years ago. |

Pump those tyres up to 32psi put skinny ones on. Accelerate slowly antisapate the lights ahead. Put petrol in the car in the morning as thats when its coldest and as petrol is by volume you get more. Keep your timing done right as you will get more powe |
