Guys, After finding out the cost of rebuilding an old 253, I am am now seriously looking at installing a crate 350 chev (carb of course) into my 73 HQ ute. I have been looking on the National Code of Practice for Light Vehicle Construction and Modification (NCOP)website and there is so much information on there that my head is still spinning. So Ill put it to this forum to see if I can get the answers. As far as I can tell, because the HQ model was released with a 350 engine then swap is quite legal. However as imported crate engines may have been produced more recently, do I have to meet the design rule criteria for the YOM of the engine. I understand that to run on ULP I may have to change the fuel filler neck, fit cat converters, and possibly a charcoal cannister. I live in north wa and would like to get some info from anyone that has done this before shedding out the hard earned reddies. The HQ is currently undergoing a full rebuild and respray. Front disks have been added, Power steering and brake booster. All chassis work has been done and new suspension, bushes, tie rods etc etc . Would like to go the 350 chev/T400/3.08 Salisbury route. Any advice on installation of a crate engine or the general process of 350 chev/T400 into HQ would be helpfull. Thanks in advance. Trev...

In NSW a 350 into a HQ is a no-brainer as this was standard fitment in some HQ models. Holden even built 2 x 350 HQ utes. All you need to do is choose an engine suitable for the HQ ADRs. Im pretty sure in NSW you are governed by whatever the sedan |

Thanks for the quick reply Byron. So basically the 350 is a good choice and if I supply the purchase documents for the crate engine or the importers letter of proof then that should suffice. Sorry for my ignorance but when you say choose an engine th

By ADRs I meant either an engine with ADRs suitable for HQ unless you want to "upgrade" the HQ, OR a crate motor. Whether its injected or not it wont matter.
