What is the difference between ordinary holden 6 cyl blocks and 6 cyl HP blocks. I am getting a lot of different information. What is the correct information?

HP was used to distinguish 2 engine sizes on the production line and was replaced by the CID at a later time.
The blocks are not "High Performance" blocks as some people think although some of the sellers on Ebay may beg to differ.

what does the hp stand for. what is the difference between the blocks or engine setups?

Im not sure why "HP" was used, maybe it was an in joke or maybe someones initials, the blocks are not special in any way and would have had the same spec as the later blocks with the correct number on the side, excepting any across the board changes to en

i was told the blocks are the same, but the hp eng had a steel crank shaft insted of a cast iron crankshaft. there must be some difference. what size eng came with a hp block? 179,186 etc

agree with Byron
I should be pointed out that the HP only came out in the EH
The EH had 179HP and 149 hi and low comp
These 149 DID NOT have 149 cast into the side - differentiated by prefix
hence blank red motor = 149
HP red motor = 179

Old holdens brought on the spot, quick decision, cash paid.

I threw one away about 8 years ago so I could put a big block 202 in. It had 40 thou overbore. The 202 was only 20 thou over and a bigger motor, so the HP went in the scrap metal bin.
