Hi,
Something Ive noticed while driving at night. My charge light on the HQ ute glows ever so slightly while running at night with stereo and high beam on. It's soooo faint I can barely see it. But it is on. Can only see it at night. If I turn high beam and stereo off, it does seem to disappear. The light comes on fine and bright when the engine is off, but key is on, so I'm convinced that the bulb is fine.
Battery doesn't go flat, always heaps of start...
Is this just normal and I haven't noticed it before? Or is it the first sign of a problem? Alternator is only a few years old.
Cheers, Jason.

Put a multimeter accoss your battery while car is going and see what charging volts you are getting maybe then turn these things on and see what it says. I think from memory it should be 14volts> you could try another car to compare difference.

Finally one I might know the answer to. Years ago my kingswood did the same thing, turned out to be a faulty diode in the alternator, because the alternator produces only ac voltage, the diode pack rectifies this into d.c to charge the battery. When these

this often happens after young punks start their cars with a good batt, leave the car running, and put another battery in and connect terminals, all while the car is running. blows the diode apparently.

I had the same problem regardless of which alternator or battery it was running, had brand new 85amp alternator still did it, I suspect it was something to do with earths.

Hi Phil,
Your theory about diodes is close but not accurate... The diodes form a bridge rectifier basically a diamond shape of diodes...that converts the alternating current to direct current.
My alt light on my hq USED to glow dimly also & I know t

Thanks everyone - certainly some places to start. Ill check out the alternator output, it may be suspect. Monarq - youre saying it turned out your system was working fine?
Jason.

hey all. my light glows, but it is because something iswrong in the wiring? which i have no idea, and it is something i did, my question is, i put a speco volt meter init, and wired it in directly, to ignition, which is also directly wired into battery, |

The brushes in your altenator are wearing out I reccon. Same thing happened to mine. Buy a set of brushes and replace them . . . . $10

I agree with RigPig, Check the brush length.
