Sorry, 2 question in 2 days...

I have a bad vibration over 50mph. I have replaced/checked the usual items (wheel bearings, replaced unis etc). Checking things one at a time. Anyway, that is not my question!

Spoke to a driveline workshop. Said I can bring it down & they can balance out of the car. A couple of questions (prefer independent of the shop)

a. On several posts, it is mentioned that the yoke should be refitted into the box exactly as it was removed. How i this possible if the shaft is balanced out of the car?

b. Uni's replaced <200miles ago. If the shaft was found to be out of balance , would I need to replace those with new ones again?

Any insight appreciated :) Goodness, the head fills up with problems that occur in old cars. Wouldn't have it any other way though!

Thanks, Paul.

Is it a new tailshaft?, or has the car just developed a vibration?
The unis should be OK. If it's a good driveline shop, they'll replace them if they need to.
I've never heard of any reason to put it in exactly as it came out. The tailshaft should be ne

Thanks a heap. Not new, a shortened shaft from years gone by though. Was mainly worried it had to be matched to my car. One of the comments I saw on another site was

if your vibration was there before you changed unis and is still there you will find

i think what they mean is when you fit the uni's you can put the front yoke 180 deg around from where it was. if you know what i mean.

when the shaft is balanced it would be balanced with unis fitted and yoke fitted so if the yoke was fitted 180 deg a

Aaahhh. Thanks for that. Wasn't aware it was balanced with the unis/yoke attached. Just told the chap I would bring down my shaft & he said nothing more. Has it ever been balanced? No idea. Shortened and she is an unknown quantity!

Cheers for the info

Paul you mentioned that it was a shortened tailshaft. If this problem has only started after fitting this tailshaft. I would check that it is the correct length for the car ie that the front yoke is going far enough in to the back of the gearbox. All the t

Paul

That story you read about putting the yoke back the right way or it will be out of phase applies to a different type of shaft from the one you have.

You may have noticed on many cars that the rear end of the shaft consists of a uni and a small
