Guys,
I have been told that a T350 would be a better choice over a T400 due to closer ratio gear changes, fitting etc. The old Hq ute will be getting a new 350 crate engine and a 10 bolt to go with it. Anyone have an opinion on which way I should go. The motor will only be around 300hp mark so dosent have to be too trick. Also does a mechanical fuel pump fit with power steering on the Hq and does the sump need to be changed on one of these crate engines.

Cheers Trev...

Mechanical fuel pump will clear in an HQ ute with power steering, but you may have to adjust the body to get the inlet / outlet pipes to clear. I ran a 400 chev in an HQ ute with mechanical pump, and fitted power steering with just a change of pipe angle

Personally i think the T400.
easier conversion.
Check to see if T350 is long or short snout.

Powersteering options: there are over 30 different alt/ PS / AC combos on a SBC, so you are not limited to only a few options.

TH400 is probably easier as they were standard auto transmission on more Holdens ie HQ 350 and HJ-late HZ 308, so you can get standard stuff easier. Plus the electric kickdown setup is simpler in my opinion.

For a TH400 you need:

Factory TH400 cross

Not sure of that. The TH350 out of a HZ, WB, VB or VC/H will fit using a trimatic/3/4spd tailshaft out of the same wheelbase. Never seen a "long snout" one before.

long and short extension housings = "long / short snout"
one T350 3C is about 115 mm longer than T350 as delivered in HZ/ WB early comm.
same crossmember locationthough.
but shorter tailshaft ( by115mm)
Hence, a ute tailshaft (125 mm shorter than 1 to
