Hi.
I was told by a well known engine builder about 15 years ago that the 186A was the one to realistically try and get, as it was higher nickel.
I have seen a few 186A after a acid bath, they ARE a more of GRey than normal.
(Simular to that of 3970010 CHev, which are also High Nickel)..
what are peoples thoughts???

sounds like a load of crap to me.

Just like 179HP was somehow better than a plain 179. Why wouldnt this logic apply to a 186K or P block? And surely to compare the greyness you would need 2 blocks dipped in the same bath.

186A is standard 186 in HR, 186K is X2 and 186S. So you would think the high nickle block would be the 186K.

anyway.
next time you see a 186A after a bath, have a look at the colour, grey, not metallic.
cheers,

186A blocks make up about 20 - 25% of 186 engine production, so it is not like they were rare or something. I am sure that by your comment you belive the rumour to be true, maybe it may have been all HR 186 engines, as the X2/186S would have been the same

when one of the top engine builders in that state tells you to look for 186A casting, and shows you one fresh out of the acid bath, which is grey (like a HI Nickel CHEV - no you don't need them side by side to tell the colour difference)
OK , so there
