My WB ute has a 308 in it that I was led to believe came from a WB Statesman. Im in the middle of a conversion from auto to supra 5 speed and a couple of little things led to checking the motor out.

It has a VT prefix - which means it's a commodore 308. How do I tell if it's blue or black?

It could be red, black or blue. VL and VT (possibly VM also) are the only prefixes that crossed all 3 colours. Just get the date code off the front on the casting behind the timing case cover. Will look like 25B2 or 1H9 or something like that.
